Episode Highlights
Training
Rich Froning discusses how his training has evolved over the years, emphasizing the importance of balancing life and fitness. Initially, he trained obsessively, dedicating nearly every waking hour to workouts. However, with the arrival of his first daughter, he realized the need to prioritize being a husband and father. Froning now focuses on maintaining fitness while balancing family and business responsibilities.
My goal needs to be being a dad and a husband first, and I just don't have that now. I do want to be super fit and I want to win the games for my team, but now I've got three kids, wife business that I run first, and then I still compete and still have fun and get to do that. But it's not my number one goal.
---
Reflecting on his early training days, he admits that while the hard work was essential, it wasn't always the smartest approach 1.
Injuries
Froning has faced several injuries throughout his career, including a torn meniscus and a broken ankle. He shares his experience of managing these injuries, often pushing through pain to continue competing. For instance, he completed the CrossFit Games with a torn meniscus, relying on cortisone shots to manage the pain.
The good news is, you can't really make it worse. He's like, if you can handle the pain, like, if we can get some of the swelling down, you can probably still up.
---
Despite these challenges, Froning has found effective treatments and continues to compete at a high level 2 3.
Mental Toughness
Mental toughness has been a cornerstone of Froning's success. He attributes his resilience to a mix of influences, including his competitive upbringing and experiences in high school sports and the fire department. These experiences helped him develop the mental fortitude needed to excel in CrossFit.
I think it was just a mix of all of it. I don't think there was one thing that I can pinpoint down or think about the mentality of what one thing it was. I think it was just a mix of all of it.
---
Froning also emphasizes the importance of having fun and staying focused, even under pressure 4 5.
